MHI – Q: What is NOT covered by Medicare?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: There are quite a few services not covered by Part A and Part B.  Lack of routine dental and vision benefits may come as an unpleasant surprise to people transitioning from employer group health plans who have become accustomed to these benefits during their working years. Hearing aids are not covered either. Although Medicare will cover short term medically necessary nursing home care in very specific cases, it will not pay for long term or custodial care. Medicare will pay for prescriptions if you sign up for Part D, but pays under Parts A and B under special circumstances.

Add to that your responsibility for paying both Part A and Part B premiums and deductibles and you can see why most people take out additional health insurance to pay what is not covered by Medicare.
