MHI – Q: What is a PACE program?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: Programs for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE programs, target people on Medicare and who need the level of care normally provided in a nursing home but prefer to receive the services in their community or their own home. The goal is one shared by patients and families alike – to allow older or disabled adults to age in place as opposed to entering an institution.

PACE programs cover all services covered by Medicare and TennCare as well as additional benefits such as adult day care, home care, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, and transportation.

PACE programs are not available in all states. The only PACE program in Tennessee is located near Chattanooga. It is co-sponsored by Alexian Brothers Community Services and the Bureau of TennCare. You must live in the service area, be at least 55 years old, need a nursing home level of care and be able to live safely (with the assistance from PACE) in your community.

Most people in Tennessee’s PACE program are on Medicaid. They have less than $2000 in assets, monthly incomes at or below $2,199, and pay nothing for the program. Private pay is also an option. PACE programs cost less than nursing home placement and offer the additional benefit of allowing you to keep your Social Security check rather than turning it over to the nursing home.
